Last January, a shop owner I have worked with for years sent me a photo: a 2008 F250 on the lift, a pile of boxes, and a text that said, "Is this the best we can do?"
He had just taken over maintenance for a small local fleet—two 2008 F250s and one Ram 1500 with the ZF 8HP automatic. One F-250 had a ZF-6 transmission, the ZF S6-650 six-speed manual. The other F-250 had a 5.4L gas engine and a cooling system that was not happy.

Here's something suppliers won't always tell you: the ZF Lifeguard 8 transmission fluid price is list price on paper, but the real price depends on the distributor. In January 2025, I got quotes from three authorized distributors. The range was $18.95 to $24.50 per liter. One shop's first phone quote was $28; another authorized distributor quoted the same fluid at $21. Price-shopping for this fluid is worth a few minutes.

The ZF-6 Transmission: Don't Assume
The other truck in the shop had the ZF-6 transmission—again, the six-speed manual, not the 6HP automatic. It had a slow leak at the shift shaft seal and a customer who wanted the fluid topped off. The shop owner asked if he could add a universal gear oil. I gave him the same answer I give every shop: read the OEM spec. The Motorad 647-180 Thermostat
Then came the thermostat. The F-250's cooling issue was likely the thermostat, and the replacement was a Motorad 647-180 thermostat—a 180-degree part with a built-in air bleed. On a 2008 F250, the air bleed matters. Air pockets cause hot spots and false temperature readings.
I used to test thermostats the lazy way: drop them in boiling water and watch them open. That's not a test. I have seen thermostats open in a pot but close slowly under flow. The Motorad 647-180 I held had a jiggle valve that moved freely, and the opening temperature was within a couple of degrees of its 180 rating. Still, I told the shop owner to install it with the bleed valve in the correct position for that engine. Put a jiggle-valve thermostat upside down and it can trap air instead of venting it.
The 2008 F250 Radiator
The biggest clue was in the radiator box. The shop had two options for the 2008 F250 radiator: a budget unit from a no-name brand and an OEM-style unit with a brand he trusted. The budget unit cost about $80 less.
When I opened the budget radiator, the transmission cooler inlet fitting had a ridge in the sealing area. It would not necessarily leak on the bench. In the vehicle, with a hot cooler line and vibration, that ridge can slice the o-ring. A radiator replacement on a 2008 F250 is about four hours of labor. A tow and a second radiator add up fast.
Here's something vendors don't want to talk about: a lot of aftermarket radiators come from the same factories. The difference is how many pieces get inspected before the lot ships. The budget radiator isn't always bad. But inconsistency is a red flag, and on a daily-driver F-250, I want fewer variables.
How to Test a 2-Pin Ignition Coil with a Multimeter
While we were waiting for the radiator, the shop's apprentice pulled out two ignition coils for the 5.4L engine in the other truck. Both were two-wire coil-on-plug coils. He asked if the multimeter could tell him whether to keep the old coils or throw them out. Short answer: it catches the obvious failures, but not every failure.

- Set the multimeter to 200 ohms (low resistance).
- Touch the probes to the two pins on the connector.

- Also do a short-to-ground check: one probe on the coil bracket, the other on either pin. You should see no continuity. Any reading means the coil is leaking voltage internally.
A multimeter is a starting point, not a replacement for a load test. I've seen a coil pass every resistance check and still misfire once the engine reached operating temperature. If a coil passes the meter but you still suspect it, use a spark tester or swap it to a known cylinder.
What Happened Next
The shop returned the bad radiator, installed the good one, set the thermostat correctly, did the 8HP service with Lifeguard 8, and filled the ZF-6 to the correct level. The 2008 F250 left with the temperature gauge where it should be. The Ram shifted cleanly.
The customer, by the way, started with a $400 order. By the end of the month, they had sent the shop two more trucks and referred a neighbor. That's why I don't like the phrase "it's just a small order." Small doesn't mean unimportant. It means potential.
Bottom line: worry less about a part's price and more about what it costs when it fails. Verify current specs and prices before you start. If something looks "close enough," that's not a reason to install it—it's a reason to slow down.
The part that looks right but isn't right is the most expensive part you will ever install.
My experience is based on several hundred component inspections at a Tier 1 supplier and in independent shops. If you're working on your own single vehicle, you can skip the distributor calls. But the core habit—check the spec, test what you can, and don't ignore a red flag because you're in a hurry—should stay the same.
