Will a car start with a blown head gasket? Usually, yes. That's exactly what makes it dangerous.
I got that question from a customer on a Tuesday morning in March 2023. His truck cranked, caught, and idled rough for about ten minutes before the temperature gauge started climbing. By the time I got eyes on it, coolant was burping out of the overflow tank.
"It was starting fine all week."
That's the thing about a blown head gasket. It doesn't fail the way people expect. It limps along, convincing you the problem is something smaller, and then it takes the rest of the cooling system with it. The gasket that barely holds and the part that almost fits have the same problem: they're only okay until they're not.
I've seen that same slow-motion failure pattern in parts sourcing. The cross-referenced part works almost long enough. Then it fails—on the customer's wallet, on your reputation, never at a convenient moment.
My opinion, after 11 years in this trade: cross-referencing critical components without verifying the actual specifications is one of the most expensive ways to save money in this industry. ZF designs the filter as part of the transmission system, not as an accessory. The bypass pressure, the media, the anti-drainback valve—those are engineered parameters. A filter with the same thread is not the same filter.
The repair came to $2,800 for the transmission rebuild, plus the original service cost, plus three weeks of the customer's boating season. I'd saved him $60 on a filter. That decision cost him thousands, and it cost me a customer who never came back.
The Rocker Arms That Weren't 'Equivalent'
In the spring of 2024, I was assembling a 6.0L gasoline engine for a local restoration shop. The owner wanted stock performance without the dealership price tag. He asked me to source quality aftermarket parts where possible. I agreed—and immediately regretted it.
I found a camshaft rocker arm set from a well-known brand. The box said "OEM specifications." It looked identical to the factory arms. Clearances checked out, the engine fired up clean, oil pressure was perfect. I delivered the car and told the owner it was ready.

Under the valve cover, the rocker arm tips were worn halfway through their hardened surface. The contact pads looked like they'd been scrubbed with coarse paper, and fine metal dust was spread through the rocker box. The case hardening on the aftermarket arms was far shallower than the factory spec. Right dimensions, wrong metallurgy.
We replaced them with factory-grade rocker arms: $780 in parts, gaskets, oil, and labor. The aftermarket set had saved the customer about $200. So we spent $980 total to learn a lesson about heat treatment. The restoration shop didn't get mad. They just stopped asking for my opinion on parts—which was worse.
The Alternator That Spoiled a Truckload of Milk
This one started as a routine quote. In November 2024, a dairy fleet asked us to replace the Thermo King alternator on one of their trailer refrigeration units. The genuine unit was $690. A generic alternator with the same mounting pattern and current rating was $315.
My initial reaction: same brackets, same amperage, what could go wrong?

True. I do not mean every genuine part is worth every dollar of its price. And if a customer genuinely can't afford the right part, the professional move is to show them the price, explain what the wrong part risks, and let them decide with open eyes. What's not okay is deciding on their behalf that "close enough" is good enough.
I'm also not saying aftermarket parts are bad. Some are excellent—some genuinely outperform the original. But "aftermarket" covers everything from brands that engineer to OE specifications to brands that copy dimensions and hope for the best. The phrase "OEM equivalent" doesn't mean anything until you verify it.
A cross-reference is a starting point for research, not the finish line. That's the lesson I baked into our shop's checklist after the 2022 disaster. In the 18 months since, that checklist has caught 47 potential cross-reference mismatches before they became expensive callbacks. Forty-seven. That's not a small sample.
