- Position the removal tool. If you're using a fork-type separator, accept that the boot may be damaged—that's fine when you're replacing the joint. If you want to save the control arm boot, use a press-style remover instead.
- Apply steady pressure. Don't force it with a sledgehammer. If it doesn't pop, re-check your tool position and add penetrating oil.
- Once the stud releases, remove the nut, then press or unscrew the ball joint from the control arm, depending on whether it's press-in or bolt-in. A ball joint press kit is the right tool for the next step.
I'll admit this took me a while to learn. In our shop, a technician tried to separate a lower arm ball joint with a cheap fork and a hammer because we had ten minutes before closing.
