In fact, at ZF, we act as a system integrator for many components. We source parts from other specialists, and we manage the interfaces. That is different from pretending we own every process.
There's a reason IATF 16949 focuses so much on capability and process control. A Tier 1 supplier isn't judged by how many processes it can claim in a capabilities brochure. It's judged by whether the parts meet the spec at the end of the line. The best way to meet that spec is to know exactly which step in the chain your expertise covers. A generalist supplier can produce good parts. It happens. But when I look at our supplier scorecards, the top performers are almost always narrow-moat specialists.
If someone asks me 'what is differential pay?' I tell them it's paying for conditions, not just output. In the same way, you should pay a specialist for the hard conditions they've mastered, and don't ask them to pretend they don't exist.
